Minimalism in Relationships: Quality Over Social Noise
Dunbar's number, cutting draining superficial obligations, and cultivating undivided attention with your closest circle.
Dunbar’s Number and Social Bandwidth
Anthropologist Robin Dunbar demonstrated that human cognitive capacity limits our close social network to roughly 150 contacts, and our intimate circle of deep trust to just 5 people.
Social media gives us the illusion that we can maintain 2,000 “friends.” In practice, this results in broad, shallow acquaintances while starving genuine relationships of deep presence.
“A friend to everyone is a friend to no one.” — Aristotle
The Practice of Relational Minimalism
- Undivided Attention: When dining or conversing with a friend or family member, put your phone completely out of sight. A phone placed face-down on a table still reduces cognitive empathy.
- Audit Energy-Draining Ties: Identify one-sided or drama-heavy relationships that leave you emotionally depleted, and gradually fade interaction without confrontation.
- Deepen the Core: Direct 80% of your relational time and warmth toward the 5 to 10 people who truly matter to you.
